Fitness Challenge Scout Badge

Currently there are many ways that the Fitness Challenge badge is undertaken but we would like to support the Scout Groups with another and hopefully new exciting way the Cubs & Scouts can achieve this very important badge

Location: The Zone @The Littledown Centre 

Age range: 8 - 15 years

Cost: £31.50 per group (Max no:16)

The Zone - a kid's gym with fantastic cardio vascular machines such as treadmills, rowers, bikes, cross trainers and fixed weight machines.

The Fitness Challenge Cub Badge: do their best in a sport or activity over a 2 week period and show how they have improved their physical fitness. This will include examining what they eat and improving their diet, how much exercise they take, how much sleep they get and explain how they might continue to improve their fitness in the future.

   

Try two new sports or physical activities at least once.

The Fitness Challenge Scout Badge: complete a 4 week training programme with the 5th week participating in their physical challenge. The 6th week group come back for last training session and badge awards.
 
Physical Challenge options.
o Distance swim (using swim lane)
o Concept rower distance challenge
o Treadmill distance challenge
o Fitness circuit challenge                           

To complete the Challenge, the Scout will need to:
· Spend between four weeks preparing for the event, through an agreed exercise programme with the fitness instructors within the Zone
· Attend a nutrition / wellness workshop during the 4 week preparation week and show an understanding of the  importance of a sensible and appropriate diet, and the need for sufficient sleep, be able to explain the   dangers  and harmful effects of smoking, alcohol and drugs.
· Keep a record of their progress during this time by updating the Zone Programme progress cards.

Package will include:

  • Direct link to Cubs/Scouts  'Fitness Challenge badge'
  • Induction and usage of the Zone equipment.
  • Personal programme for each pupil that includes expectation and boundaries.
  • Self-evaluation education and  knowledge of what they are trying to achieve and how to go about it.
  • Nutrition information - amazing fun food facts that the children will find fascinating.
  • Healthy body programme - why should we exercise? What changes does the body go through with exercise and  without!
  • Awards / certificates.
  • Programme provided that enables Cub/Scout to continue some routines at home.
    Instructor on hand every week.

Benefits to the Cub/Scout
More energy - better social and team work skills - greater self-esteem - better scout attendance - improve concentration levels - less risk of exclusion - progress in other Scout activities - weight management for pupils with overweight and obese issues - support and guidance for pupils who are under weight- increased opportunities for leadership development  taking part in community based activity - Cubs/Scouts are in a safe and healthy environment

Overview:

  • Maximum of 16 pupils can be taken to The Zone. Cub/Scout leader may stay in the area or use the main gym for their own exercise plan.
  • Cubs/Scouts may use the public change areas or come ready in their kit and leave bags to the side of the Zone.
  • A full induction will be given to each pupil.
  • Drinks fountain located in the area.
  • Each Cub/Scout will be issued with casual card* that can be used at all times to gain access on a casual basis.
  • Cubs/Scouts would need to get parents to complete health and Safety application. These forms can be sent to  the Scout Group prior to their visit.

* All the Littledown Centre staff have been CRB checked and keep to our Child Protection Guidelines.

Risk assessment forms have all been undertaken by Bournemouth Borough Council Health & Safety Department.  Copies of all theses forms can be provided to the Cub/Scout leader.
